Chapter Fourteen

Nova headed to the main office of Sugar Springs High School, the first time she had been back since registering Leo after their move to the small town. The last three weeks had been busy ones. She had met with service people, explaining exactly how she would be using the space on the square, even drawing the diagram of where she wanted everything to be located. The plumber had been able to put in two industrial farmhouse sinks, deep and long, on opposite sides of the room where the painting parties would take place. The electrician had done some rewiring, and the space had brighter—yet softer—lights. She had also strung some white party lights for a playful effect.

Furniture had also been ordered, and those tables and chairs would be coming in next week. The handyman was busy this week with painting the entire store and building shelving so that she could display her pottery. He also, along with his son, had designed display cases for her jewelry. Every minute not spent at the store was busy creating pieces for display and coming up with paintings for the partiers to try and emulate. Fortunately, she had been inspired by her new life here in Sugar Springs and had been productive.

Now, she was going to meet with the tech teacher, Brendan Whittaker, about the possibility of the teacher and some of his students creating her website, as well as speaking with the principal regarding the raffles she was heading up.

Entering the office, Rilda O’Riley spotted her and rose from her desk.

“Hey, Nova. Come sign in if you would.”

She did so, and the clerk issued Nova a visitor’s badge after taking her picture. She peeled the back from it and stuck the pass on her blouse.

“Thanks again for bringing the snacks last night, Rilda.”

The office worker smiled. “You can’t have a meeting without snacks. I thought everything went really well, creating teams to sell raffle tickets as fans enter the gates, as well as having those volunteers circulate throughout the stands during the first half of the game.”

“I think it’ll help moving into the stands. I know parents don’t want to miss any of the game and hurry through the gates in order to grab a good seat.”

“You’ve got smart ideas, Nova. Don’t let anyone say otherwise.”

She frowned. “You mean Phyllis Arnold and her crew.”

She had learned through her friends that Phyllis was on a rampage, badmouthing Nova—and also Cole. Jessica had told her not to worry about it, saying most booster club members came down firmly on Cole’s side and hers. It didn’t hurt that Cole’s team had won their first two games, both away ones. Winning was the golden ticket in football.

“Let me call Brendan and let him know you’re here.”

Rilda stepped away and made the call, saying, “I’ll send her right up.” Signaling to a student sitting in a chair scrolling through her phone, she said, “Take Miss Turner up to Mr. Whittaker’s classroom.” To Nova, she added, “Come back to the office when you’re done, and I’ll get you in to see Joe Bob.
